Profile

Paul W.S. Heng has a basic degree in pharmacy and obtained his doctorate from the National University of Singapore in 1985. He has since joined the National University of Singapore as a faculty member, currently serving as an associate professor with the Department of Pharmacy. He served as head of department for two terms from 2000 to 2004 and is the principal investigator for GEA-NUS Pharmaceutical Processing Research Laboratory, a research laboratory focused in process and product development related to pharmaceutical technology. Heng was a founding member and past president of the Asian Association of Schools of Pharmacy and also served in the formation of the Asian Federation of Pharmaceutical Scientists. He has an adjunct appointment with the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences, an A*STAR institute, and is currently the chairman of the Quality Control Advisory Committee, Ministry of Health, Singapore, and vice-chairperson of the Specialty Committee of TCM Pharmaceutics of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, among others. His research interest is in pharmaceutical technology, in areas of coating, pelletization, microencapsulation, powder technology, preparation of botanicals, controlled release formulations, and process science. He has authored or coauthored over 220 international refereed research journal articles, a number of conference and other non-refereed papers, and seven book chapters.

 

Research Interest

My research is in the area of pharmaceutical technology, with emphasis in manufacturing processes and dosage form design. The main areas of work centre on compaction studies using universal testing machine and roller compactor, pelletisation by wet and melt methods, coating for colour and controlled drug delivery, and specialised delivery systems including transdermal and inhalation technologies.

  • Served two terms, 2000-2004 as Head of Department of Pharmacy, National University of Singapore and saw to its transition into a very research-active hub and increased undergraduate and post-graduate student numbers
  • Served as 3rd President (2006-7) of the Asian Association of Schools of Pharmacy (AASP); saw to the registration of AASP in Singapore and setting up its official website
  • Served as Chairman of the Quality Control Advisory Committee since 1999, the committee that oversees the establishment regulatory controls for the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Singapore.
  • Principal investigator responsible for the establishment of GEA-NUS Pharmaceutical Processing Research Laboratory in 1997, now a world-class research laboratory for pharmaceutical technology, well-recognized in Asia
