Biography

Dr. Jesse Zhu is a Distinguished University Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, at Western University, in London, Ontario, Canada.  He is also a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada. 
Dr. Zhu received his B. Eng. from Tsinghua University in Beijing in 1982 and PhD from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in 1998, both in Chemical Engineering.  After working several years as a Research Scientist for Shell Research in the Netherlands and at another university in Canada, he moved to Western University in London, Canada in 1990, where he quickly attained full professorship in 1999.  By the same year, he established the Particle Technology Research Centre, the first in Canada, at his university and has served as its Director since then.  This centre is comprised of 15 Professors carrying out numerous research projects over a wide range of particle related technologies.  Between 2000 and 2005, he held the position of Senior Ontario ORDCF Research Chair for Ultrafine Powder Technology, sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation.  In 2004, he became a Senior Canada Research Chair, established by the Canadian Government. 
Prof. Zhu has many years of experience in the research area of powder handling, fluid-particle and multi-phase flow systems.  His contributions to fundamental research and technology developments can be reflected by the over 300 referred journal publications, the dozen of patents granted, the over 85 Masters and PhD students graduated under his supervision, the sizable research funding and the international scholarly activities such as chairing international conferences and serving on journal editorial boards.  Currently he is leading a very successful Canada Research Chair Program in Particle Technology Applications at Western University, with 30-40 graduate students, post doctoral fellows and research engineers/assistants, working on a very wide range of projects.  In addition to fundamental research, he is particularly active in technology development and transfer, with 20 granted patents and several more pending.  Some of the inventions have been commercialized and/or are now in the process of being commercialized.  Those include an ultrafine powder technology for automobile and materials industry, a dry powder coating technology for pharmaceutical tablets, a dry powder inhalation technology, and a fluidized bed bioreactor for efficient wastewater treatment. 
Many awards were credited to his research achievements including three major awards given by the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering (Syncrude Innovation Award for Outstanding Young Chemical Engineer, Bantrel Award in Design and Industrial Practice, and R.S. Jane Award as the highest award of the society), the PSRI Fluidization Lectureship Award by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Premier's Research Excellence Award, the Ontario Professional Engineers Engineering Medal, and the Distinguished University Professor and the Engineering Prize for Achievement in Research by Western University. 

Dr. Zhu has also chaired and co-chaired several international conferences.  In Canada, Dr. Zhu was the Technical Program Chair of the 1998 Annual Conference of the Canadian Chemical Engineering and served as the Conference Chair for the same conference in 2011.  He is also frequently sought for speakers, serve as plenary and keynote speakers on many occasions around the world. 

 

Research Interest

Multiphase flow systems and we invented technologies in using fluidized and circulating fluidized bed biological reactors for efficient wastewater treatment.
