CLINICAL
2009 - Present, Attending Surgeon, San Francisco, CA, UCSF Medical Center: Provide surgical services, weekend and evening emergency call, surgery clinic visits

SUMMARY OF CLINICAL ACTIVITIES

My clinical interests are obesity, metabolic disease, and diseases of the foregut (paraesophageal hernia, esopheal motility disease, and gastroesophageal reflux disease).  I perform advanced laparoscopic (minimially-invasive) surgery to treat these diseases.  Other clinical interests are the treatment of hernia and acute care surgery.  Major clinical activities include the UCSF Bariatric Surgery Program and the UCSF Acute Care Surgery Hospitalist program.

My clinical practice performs about 400 procedures per year at Parnassus.  This practice forms the basis of a rich training experience for medical students, residents, and fellows.

Another major clinical activity has been the implementation of EPIC at UCSF (APeX), a university-wide, $160 million electronic medical record system.  I spearheaded the surgeon implementation of the system, developing and designing surgeon-specific workflows in the clinics and in the operating room.   We were successful in deploying APeX in over 40 operating rooms and over 200 surgeons' practices in 18 months, less than half then normal implementation time, without significant decrease in RVU or OR throughput.
