Biography

Dr. Fisher received his Ph.D. from Auburn University in 2010. His dissertation work examined the acute oxidative stress and immune cell response following high-intensity interval exercise. Previously, he completed my B.S. and M.S. degrees in Exercise Physiology from Hillsdale College and Mississippi State University. He joined the UAB Nutrition and Obesity Research Center in the Department of Nutrition Sciences in June 2010 working under the mentorship of Dr’s Barbara Gower and Gary Hunter. Dr. Fisher is currently an Assistant Professor of Exercise Physiology in the Department of Human Studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Additionally, he holds Associate Scientist appointments in the Nutrition and Obesity Research Center and the Center for Exercise Medicine. His current research is directed towards developing nutritional and behavioral strategies that can reduce the prevalence of metabolic and cardiovascular complications that are associated with type 2 diabetes. He is specifically interested in the role of mitochondrial bioenergetics, reactive oxygen species and markers of inflammation in the pathogenesis of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.
