Biography

Jose A. Arruda, MD, FACP, FASN, FAHA, FNKF is the Chief of the Division of Nephrology at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System in Chicago and the Medical Director of the University of Illinois Dialysis Center and the Fresenius Medical Care Chicago Westside Dialysis Unit. Dr. Arruda is also a Keeton Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago and a Professor of Physiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago Graduate College. He earned a medical degree from the Universidade Federal Fluminense School of Medicine in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and completed a residency in internal medicine at Antonio Pedro Teaching Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and fellowships in nephrology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago, Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine. Dr. Arruda is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.

Dr. Arruda is a fellow of the American Society of Nephrology, the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association and the National Kidney Foundation.  He is a member of the International Society of Nephrology and the American Society for Clinical Investigation, among many other memberships. As an experienced speaker, he has lectured on nephrology-related topics at numerous universities and foundations.  In addition, he has given presentation at regional, national and international meetings.  He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers and  350 abstracts and has conducted several clinical trials.

Research efforts have investigated renal insufficiency as well as urinary acidification; interests and clinical trials have addressed anemia in dialysis patients, anticoagulant treatment of hemodialysis patients, and chronic kidney disease.
