Biography

Dr. Roberts is the Henson Distinguished Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Pediatric, University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry. He  previously served for five years as the Graduate Program Director (Pediatric Dentistry ) and for ten years as Chair, Department of Pediatric Dentistry.  Dr. Roberts received his DDS degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch (Houston, TX) and completed a Hospital Rotating Dental Internship at the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Hospital in Boston, MA.  He received his MScD in pediatric dentistry from the Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry.  Dr. Roberts retired at the rank of Dental Director (Captain-USN) from the USPHS in 1989.  The last eight years of his service in the USPHS were as the Chief, Patient Care Section and Deputy Clinical Director, NIDR, NIH.  He received numerous decorations including the Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medal.  He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD).  Dr. Roberts joined the Department of Pediatric Dentistry faculty at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1989. Dr. Roberts has authored over 100 peer reviewed journal  publications and contributed to four pediatric dentistry textbooks.  His primary research interests are in dental care for the medically compromised pediatric patient, eating disorders and application of lasers in dentistry.  His honors include being elected as a Director of the ABPD, serving as President of the College of Diplomates of the ABPD, and President of the Foundation of Diplomates of the ABPD.   He was the recipient of The John C. Brauer Award by the Dental Alumni Association of the UNC School of Dentistry and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Boston University School of Dentistry
