Research Interest

I am a hematologist-oncologist with over 30 years of both clinical and research experience specializing in hematologic malignancies and stem cell transplantation.  My predominant professional activity is as a clinician providing care to a large cohort of patients with blood disorders and undergoing stem cell transplantation. As director of Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at our institution, I have developed a deep understanding of not only the clinical issues but also complex regulatory societal issues related to transplantation. As a researcher, I have studied hematopoietic stem cells in the laboratory characterizing the stem cells obtained from disparate sources (marrow, cord blood or fetal liver). More recently, my research activities have focused on clinical aspects of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and novel therapies of multiple myeloma and amyloidosis. I have participated in numerous clinical trials and led many as principal investigator. I am an active member of various professional organizations including ASH, ASCO, ASBMT and research consortia and have served as reviewer for many journals. I have been privileged to be involved in teaching for many years, have mentored several fellows, and currently serve as Fellowship Program Director.
