Biography

Prof. Huang has been teaching and research in environmental engineering for over 45 years. He received his BS (1964) in civil engineering from National Taiwan University and his MS (1966) and Ph.D. (1971) in environmental engineering and aquatic chemistry, respectively, from Harvard University. He taught at Wayne State University (1971-1974)as an assistant professor in the department of civil and environmental engineering, and joined the University of Delaware in 1974 as assistant professor, promoted to the ranks of associate professor, full professor, distinguished professor, and Donald C. Phillips professor in 1977, 1981, 1992, and 2002, respectively.  He was awarded the Francis Alison professorship in 2010, the highest honor at the University of Delaware and served as the civil and environmental engineering departmental chairman in 1996-2001. Currently, he is a visiting distinguished chair professor of National Taiwan University, National Chao Tung University, and National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan.

Prof. Huang is known globally for his research contributions in:(1) adsorption processes/technology for the removal of heavy metals and hazardous chemicals from water and wastewater, (2) advanced oxidation processes for water and wastewater treatment, and (3)environmental nanotechnology with an emphasis on developing innovative nanomaterials and systems for environmental applications, studying the fate and transport of engineered nanoparticles in the aquatic environment, and investigating the responses of ecological systems to engineered nanoparticles.Prof. Huang has published over 300 technical papers with a current h-index of 74 and 185,987citations (Google Scholar). He also is an author of Citation Classic.

Prof. Huang hasmentored 16 post-doctors and supervised the thesis research of over100 graduate students (63M.S. and 41Ph. D). He has also advised 7 international Ph.D. students from Spain, Korea, China, and Taiwan.His former M.S./Ph.D. students and post-doctors are now university president, vice presidents, college deans and departmental chairs, center directors, andprofessors at major universities in USA (8), China (3), Taiwan (14), Korea (3), Germany (1), Turkey(1), Spain (1) and Brazil (1).

Prof. Huang has received numerous honorsespecially the Gorgon Maskew Fair Medal from Water Environment Federation for worthy accomplishments in the training and development of future engineer (1999)and the Gordon Maskew Fair Award from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers for substantial contributions to the status of the engineering profession, the quality of the worlds’ environment and the Academy(2012).(Prof. Gordon Maskew Fair was the pioneer of modern environmental engineering). For his life-time achievements, Prof. Huang has been honored in a Special Issue on “Environmental Nanotechnology and Sustainability in Water Treatment”published by the Journal of Separation and Purification Technology, Elsevier Publishing in 2015, and a Special Issue on “Advances in Research and Development of Sustainable Environmental Technology”published by Journal of Environmental Engineering, American Society of Civil Engineers, Vol. 138 No. 3, 2012.Prof. Huang was honored in anHonoring Symposium on “Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Treatment Processes” by the Division of Environmental Chemistry, American Chemical Society on August 10-14, 2014, in San Francisco, CA.Prof. Huang was the awardee of the 2017 Asian American Engineers of the Year Lifetime Achievements Award and recipient of the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award of the Chinese American Professors in Environmental Engineering and Science.

Prof. Huang is an active participant of professional engineering organizations. He is a co-founder of the  International Conference on Sustainable Water Environment in addition to serving as editor or on the editorial board of numeral international journals including the Journal of Environmental Engineering and the Journal of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste of American Society of Civil Engineers, Frontiers of Environmental Science and Engineering of Springer Publisher and The Science of Total Environment of Elsevier Publisher.
