Biography

My name is  Malek G. Massad. I am the Sara Smart Mansueto Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago.  After graduating from the American University of Beirut School of Medicine in 1983, I completed my general surgery residency training at the University of Illinois followed by a cardiothoracic surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. I undertook  research fellowships  in thoracic organ transplantation at Northwestern University and in cardiovascular neurobiology at the Cleveland Clinic Research Institute. These were followed by a clinical fellowship in heart and lung transplantation and artificial circulatory support at the Cleveland Clinic. I joined the Faculty of the Department of Surgery at the University in Illinois in 1996 and was promoted to the rank of professor with tenure in 2006. I was named one of America's top heart surgeons by the Consumers Research Council of America. I am also listed in Castle Connolly's Guide to America's top doctors (for 10 years in a row) and in Chicago Magazine’s list of best doctors in thoracic surgery. I am a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and The American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
