He attended the University of Mississippi, Oxford, Mississippi, receiving a B.S. degree in Biology (1969), and an M.S. degree in Biology (1971). From 1971-1972 he was Instructor of Biology at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, Arkansas. He entered the Ph.D. program in the Department of Anatomy at the Medical College of Georgia (now Georgia Regents University) in 1972 and graduated in 1976. From 1975-1982 Dr. Davenport was a faculty member in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi. In 1982, Dr. Davenport joined the Department of Oral Pathology at LSU School of Dentistry, New Orleans, Louisiana. He also held an adjunct position in the Department of Anatomy. In addition, Dr. Davenport served as the Director of the Research Histology Laboratory, and as the Coordinator of Support Technologies (TV/AV, Medical Photography, Medical Graphic Arts, and Computer Services). While at LSU School of Dentistry he served on numerous Dental School and Health Science Center committees.
In 2002, Dr. Davenport joined the inaugural faculty at the UNLV School of Dental Medicine, Las Vegas, NV, where he now serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Biomedical Sciences.
